Xi-RenCao(SM\'89-F\'96)receivedtheM.S.andPh.D.degreesfromHarvardUniversity,in1981and1984,respectively,wherehewasaresearchfellowfrom1984to1986.Hethenworkedasaconsultantengineer/engineeringmanageratDigitalEquipmentCorporation,Massachusetts,U.S.A,untilOctober1993.ThenhejoinedtheHongKongUniversityofScienceandTechnology(HKUST),whereheiscurrentlychairprofessor,directoroftheResearchCenterforNetworking.HeheldvisitingpositionsatHarvardUniversity,UniversityofMassachusettsatAmherst,AT&TLabs,UniversityofMarylandatCollegePark,UniversityofNotreDame,TsinghuaUniversity,UniversityofScienceandTechnologyofChina,andotheruniversities.Ihavetheprivilegeofparticipatinginthedevelopmentofthediscreteeventdynamicsystems(DEDS)almoststartingfromitsbeginning.Inthistalk,Iwillreviewitsbriefhistoryandmajorresults,inparticularinperformanceoptimizationofDEDSanditsextensions.Iwillsharemyexperiencesonandviewsonhowaresearchfieldisevolving,whataretheimportantfeaturesforaresearcher,therelationsbetweentheoryandapplications,intuitionsandmathematics,peerrecognitionsand“coldstool”,andmanyothers.

报告内容简介:Thediscoveryofepisodicnon-volcanictremorandslip(ETS)eventsinmultiplesubductionzonesisarguablythemostintriguingnewphenomenoninearthquakeseismologyinthepasttwodecades.Inthispresentation,Iwillfirstdiscussnumericalmodelingefforttounderstandthephysicalmechanismofepisodicslowslipevents(SSE)intheframeworkofrate-statefriction.Wehaveimplementedrealisticthree-dimensionalsubductionfaultgeometry,andusedtremordistributionandgravitationalanomaliesalongtheCascadiamargintoconstrainfrictionalparametersintheSSEcyclemodel.ThemodeledSSEscapturethemajorcharacteristicsrevealedbyGPSobservationsinnorthernCascadia.TwominorslippatcheswithsmallerareasandcumulativeslipsstraddleacentralslippatchbeneathPortAngeleswhereSSEsappearevery~1.5yearswithamaximumslipof~2.5cm.Thealong-strikesegmentationofslowslipisinverselyrelatedtothelocalfaultdipandstrikeanglesoftheslowslipzone,suggestingstronggeometricalcontrolontheslowslipprocess.SegmentationofMw6.0SSEs,representedbytheaverageslipreleasedovermanySSEcycles,appearsspontaneouslymimickingthetremordistributions,whileindividualSSEscanstillpropagationacrossthesegmentationboundaries,indicatingadjacentSSEinteractionsasobservedintime-dependentGPSinversions.IwillalsopresentourrecentworkonstressinversionandimplicationsforaweaksubductionplateboundaryatseismogenicdepthsinsouthernCascadianeartheMendocinoTripleJunction.

报告人简介:Dr.DaliKongobtainedhisB.Sc.degreein2008fromDept.ofAstronomy,NanjingUniversity,China.HethenobtainedhisPhDdegreein2012,underthesupervisionofProf.KekeZhang,fromCollegeofEngineering,MathematicsandPhysicalSciences,UniversityofExeter,UK.Afterthat,hecontinuedworkinginExeterasaResearchFellowunderthesupportofaLeverhulmeFellowshipuntilMay2017.Dr.KongwasselectedbyChinesegovernment\'s\'Youth1000program\'in2017.HewasthereforeofferedaresearchscientistpositioninShanghaiAstronomicalObservatory,ChineseAcademyofSciences.Hismainareasofresearchesaretheoreticalandcomputationalfluidmechanics,highperformancecomputingandplanetarysciences.By2017,DrKonghaspublishedmorethan30peer-reviewedjournalarticlesanddelivered5invitedtalksininternationalconferences.HewasawardedtheRoyalAstronomicalSociety\'WintonCapitalPrize\'in2016.报告内容简介:TheequatoriallyantisymmetricgravitationalfieldofJupiterisnearlyunaffectedbyitsrotationaldistortionand,hence,itprovidesadirectwindowintotheantisymmetricfluidmotiontakingplaceinJupiter\'sinterior.Wederive,usingthehigh-precisionantisymmetricgravitationaldataacquiredbytheJunospacecraftandthethermal-gravitationalwindequationinsphericalgeometry(atwo-dimensionalkernelintegralequationwiththeGreen\'sfunctioninitsintegrand),thelocation/structure/amplitudeoftheequatoriallyantisymmetriczonalflowofJupiterwithoutmakinganypriorassumptionsaboutthesefeatures.Weshowthattheequatoriallyantisymmetriczonalflowisprimarilyconfinedintheouterenvelopeapproximatelyin0.8R<r<R,whereRisJupiter\'sradius,hasatypicalspeedabout5m/s,andalternatesintheprogradeandretrogradedirection.Theantisymmetriczonalflowmostlikelyderivesfrominstabilitiesinthesymmetricflow.Thereforethesymmetriczonalflowobservedatthesurfacemustextenddownwardintotheregionwheretheantisymmetricwindsaregenerated.OurresultssuggestthattheJovianconvectivedynamoisoperatingintheregionapproximatelyr<0.8Rwheretheelectricalconductivityisbelievedtobesufficientlyhigh.Thelocation/structure/amplitudeoftheequatoriallyantisymmetriczonalflowinJupiter\'sinteriorderivedfromtheJovianequatoriallyantisymmetricgravitationalfieldmayanswerthelong-standingscientificquestionaboutthedynamics/depthofthecloud-levelzonalflowonJupiter.

Prof.Dr.JeroenJ.L.M.Cornelissen,borninAugust12,1972inVeghel,theNetherlands.CurrentlyheisaprofessorinBiomolecularNanotechnologyattheUniversityofTwente,Enschede,Netherlands.Hisresearchinterestsareinwell-definedpolymerarchitectures,hybridsystemsofsyntheticmacromoleculesandbiopolymersandtheuseofvirusesasbuildingblocksinfunctionalmaterials.Since2011themainfocusofhisresearchactivitieshasbeenontheuseofproteincagesinmaterialscienceandastoolsinsyntheticbiology,i.e.constructingmimicsforproteinbasedbacterialorganelles.ThelatterresearchlinewasstartedwithhisVidigrantin2005andsuccessfullyexpandedin2007withaprestigiousEURYIAward.Theuseofviruscapsidproteins(andlaterbacterialnanocompartments)waspioneeredbyCornelissen’sgroupandtheyoperateontheinternationalforefront.Encasingenzymesandothercatalyticentitiesinsidethenanometer-sizedconfinementledtodifferentreactionkinetics,shininglightonthefunctioningofprotein-basedorganelles.Inthedirectionofmaterialsciencetheyhavemadesubstantialprogressinthelast5years.Cornelissen’sgroupmanagedtoencaselargearomaticdyemoleculesinsidetheCCMVcapsuleandshowthattheiropticalandself-assemblypropertiesdrasticallychange.Majorcontributionshavebeen,furthermore,madeinunderstandingthedelicateinterplaybetweenprotein-proteinandprotein-cargointeractions.Theyunderstandnowhowtoemploythevirusproteinassemblytoconstructfunctionalparticles,molecularwiresorlarger,hierarchicalassembliesofmultipleviruscages.ThislastsubjectisusedinanapplicationdrivenprojecttogetherwithDSMcompanytoemployproteinassemblyasatooltocontrolthinfilmreflectivity.Finally,HewasinvolvedintheinitiationofanewresearchdirectioninmylaboratoryledbyProf.Katsonis.Viatheintroductionofresponsivemolecularmotorsinliquidcrystallinematrices,adaptivematerialsbecomeaccessible.
