Abstract: A central question facing the bottom-up approach toward material design is how to faithfullytransfer the function at the molecular level to the material properties at the macroscopic level.Inthe past years,there has been a grow ing trend of designing functional materials with dynamicallytunable properties.These'smart' materials necessitate a new level ofcontrol over the structural andfunctional properties of macromolecules as well as their interactions with extemal stimuli.Although natural evolution has led to the creation of a vast number of protein molecules withextraordinary structural and functional diversity,such an ecological diversity has yet to be fullyutilized to design and create macroscopic'smart materials.Taking adv antage of a new categoryof protein chemi stries genetically encoded click chemistry,we focus on the development ofprotein materials through directed assembly of recombinant protein molecules,w hich has led to avariety of applications ranging from tissue engineering to environmental remediation.
